Door closers for existing openings

A door closer is the device, hydraulic on almost every commercial door, that shuts the door on its own after it has been opened, and controls how fast it swings and how firmly it latches.

Replacement closers for existing commercial openings, from Grade 1 surface closers on busy entrances to floor closers under pivot hung doors, with the arm the opening needs.

If the old closer left holes in the door and frame, say so on the quote request. Matching the existing pattern often saves drilling a door that is still good.

How it is specified

  • Grade. ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 is the heavy duty standard and belongs on main entrances, stairwells and any high traffic opening.
  • Size. Closer size is set by door width and weight, not by preference.
  • Arm type. Regular, parallel or top jamb, set by which side of the door and frame the closer can mount on.
  • Surface or floor closer. A surface closer mounts on the door or frame and is the common replacement.
  • Fire rating. A fire rated opening needs a closer listed for it, and must never have mechanical dogging or a hold open unless that hold open releases on alarm.

What usually fails

Oil leaking down the door is the end of that closer body. A door that slams, or no longer pulls to a latch, is usually adjustment or a worn arm. A closer torn out of the door is a mounting problem, and the fix is often a reinforcing plate rather than a bigger closer.

Photograph the closer body, the arm and the mounting on both door and frame. The markings on the body usually identify it.

Questions about door closers

Why do most parts here have no price?

Most of this category is configured and special order: the part number only exists once the options are set. A part we list shows its price on its own page; everything else is quoted with the part number, grade, finish, price and lead time, the same business day.

Can a fire door have a hold open closer?

Only where the hold open releases when the alarm sounds, so the door closes. A mechanical hold open that keeps a rated door open is not permitted. Can I reuse the holes the old closer left?

Often, if the replacement matches the old mounting pattern. Send a photo of the door face and the frame with the old closer still on, and we will say whether it does.
