Hinges and pivots for existing openings

A commercial door hinge carries the weight of the door, and the extra load a closer puts on it, through every swing, which is why commercial doors hang on ball bearing, continuous or pivot hinges.

How it is specified

  • Size. Commonly 4 1/2 by 4 1/2 inches on standard commercial doors, full mortise into the door and frame.
  • Bearings. Ball bearing hinges carry the load a door closer puts on an opening.
  • NRP. Non removable pin hinges stop the pin being driven out from the unsecured side, which matters on any exterior outswing door.
  • Continuous geared. A geared continuous hinge spreads load along the full height of the door and is the answer to a door that has already sagged, or to a very high traffic opening.
  • Pivots. A pivot set carries the door from the floor and the head of the frame instead of the jamb, on heavy, offset-hung or center-hung doors.

What usually fails

A squeal is a worn bearing and a warning. A door that catches the frame at the top corner, or will not latch without a shove, has usually dropped on its hinges, and the screws have often pulled in the frame too. That is the moment to consider a continuous geared hinge.

Photograph one hinge open, the top of the door against the frame, and the door edge, and measure the hinge leaf rather than guessing it.

Why do most parts here have no price?

What does NRP mean and do I need it?

Non removable pin. It stops the pin being driven out, so the door cannot be lifted off from outside. You need it on any exterior outswing door, because the pins are on the unsecured side.

My door has dropped. Do I need a continuous hinge?

Often, yes. A geared continuous hinge spreads the load along the whole height of the door instead of three points, which is why it is the usual answer to a door that has sagged once already.
