How the part number is built
Every 9K part number is built the same way: 9K with the backset digit, then the core housing, the function, the lever, the rose, the strike and the finish. 9K3-7-AB-15-D-S3-626 is an entrance lock with a 2-3/4 in backset, 7-pin core housing, 15 lever, D rose, S3 strike and satin chrome finish; most distributors write it 9K37AB15DS3626.

Every part number on this page ships less core. A keyed lock needs one BEST core and the intruder needs two, inside and outside; cores are ordered separately, and a keyed core ships only after its keying is confirmed in writing. In every function above the inside lever is always free (BEST's function chart). BEST makes more functions, such as office (B), corridor (C), communicating (S) and exit (Y). Need a configuration that is not in the table? Send us the part number and we quote it the same business day.

Will the BEST 9K fit my door?
The 9K fits a door 1-3/4 to 2-1/4 in thick with a 2-1/8 in cross bore and a 1 in edge bore at 2-3/4 in backset, plus two 5/16 in through-bolt holes, and a frame cut for the 4-7/8 in ANSI strike.
Door preparation
The 9K fits BEST's standard door preparation for a cylindrical lock, ANSI A115.2 for 1-3/4 in doors: a 2-1/8 in cross bore and a 1 in edge bore at 2-3/4 in backset. It also needs two 5/16 in through-bolt holes at 12 and 6 o'clock, which BEST's KD303 jig drills from the existing bore.
Door thickness
The lock comes set for a 1-3/4 in door and is adjusted on site for doors up to 2-1/4 in, by turning the outside rose liner to the matching groove on the through-bolt studs. A 1-3/8 in door takes BEST's thin-door spacers; tell us the thickness before you order.
Frame and strike
Every part here comes with the S3 strike, 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 in with a curved lip, for the standard ANSI frame cutout. BEST also makes the 9K with its STK strike, 2-3/4 x 1-1/8 in with a curved lip and box; if the frame is cut for that, tell us before you order.
Hollow metal door
BEST's instructions ask you to check that a hollow metal door is reinforced enough to hold the lock, and to consult the door's maker if it is not.
Keyed locks and cores
Keyed 9K locks ship less core. The 7-pin housing takes any BEST interchangeable core; a 6-pin core needs BEST's six pin spacer (part 1882120) or a 6-pin throw member, ordered separately, so tell us the pin count. The intruder takes two cores, inside and outside. We confirm the keyway, keying and number of keys in writing before a keyed core ships.
Keeping another maker's keys
BEST makes 9K levers that take other makers' cylinders and cores, so a building can keep its existing keys: non-interchangeable cylinders from Corbin Russwin, Medeco, Sargent and Yale, and removable cores from Corbin Russwin, Sargent and Yale, among others (BEST 9K FAQ and adaptations sheet BA-0345). The cylinder or core is not included with these options, they are different part numbers from the ones on this page, and BEST says an interchangeable core lock cannot be changed to a non-interchangeable one or back. Tell us the make of your keys and we confirm the part in writing.
Functions
Each function locks and unlocks in its own way; How the part number is built gives BEST's description of each. In every function on this page the inside lever is always free. We do not advise which function a door needs; where codes apply, your AHJ makes the final call.
Fire-rated door
BEST lists the 9K with Underwriters Laboratories for 3-hour A label doors: single doors up to 4 x 10 ft and pairs up to 8 ft wide and 10 ft high. Whether a lock may go on your door is decided by your Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
Door hand
You do not choose a hand when ordering: BEST's 9K order code has no handing position. The latch goes in with its bevel toward the strike, and each lever is pushed on pointing toward the hinges.
Replacing an old lock
Send a photo of both sides of the door, the lock edge and the frame. We confirm the function, lever, rose, backset, strike and finish in writing before anything ships.
Locks on doors in a path of egress and on fire-rated doors are covered by building, fire and accessibility codes. Whether this lock, and which function, may go on your door is decided by your Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). We supply listed hardware and confirm in writing the part number, function and keying you have chosen; we do not decide code compliance.
How do I install the BEST 9K?
The 9K goes into a 2-1/8 in bore with a 1 in edge bore and two 5/16 in through-bolt holes, is set to the door's thickness, and fits from the outside of the door, with the core added last.
Mark the door
Fold BEST's template over the high edge of the door bevel and mark the drill points. BEST suggests 40-5/16 in from the floor to the lock's centerline; on a steel frame the latch centerline must line up with the center of the strike preparation.
Bore the door and fit the latch
Bore a 2-1/8 in hole from both sides to the center of the door, drill a 1 in hole from the edge into it and mortise the edge for the latch face. Fit the latch with its bevel toward the strike; its tabs should project into the 2-1/8 in hole.
Drill the through-bolt holes
Fit BEST's KD303 jig in the bore, engaged with the latch tabs and parallel with the door edge, and drill the two 5/16 in holes halfway into the door; turn the jig over and repeat from the other side.
Set the door thickness
Pull the rose locking pin and turn the outside rose liner in or out until the groove for the door's thickness, 1-3/4, 2 or 2-1/4 in, lines up with the hub face, and check that the pin locks into the rose liner.
Chassis and trim
Fit the chassis from the outside, so that the latch tabs engage the chassis frame and the latch tailpiece engages the retractor. Then the inside liner and through-bolts, the rose pressed onto the liner, and the lever, pushed on pointing toward the hinges until it seats.
Strike and core
Mortise the jamb for the strike box and plate in line with the latchbolt; BEST warns that the deadlocking plunger must not enter the strike opening, and that a gap of more than 1/8 in may reduce security. To fit the core, put the throw member on its back, turn the control key 15 degrees right, push the core into the lever, turn the key back and withdraw it. BEST warns that the control key removes cores and opens doors, so keep it secure.
From BEST's installation instructions for 93K to 95K cylindrical locks (T56075), bound in the 9K service manual (T56082) listed under Documents. Prepare the door from BEST's template, not from this page.
What else does the BEST 9K need?
A 9K comes with its latch and S3 strike; each keyed lock also needs a BEST core, two for the intruder. These parts supply the core, drill a through-bolt prep, take the lock apart, or replace the strike or latch.

Questions about the BEST 9K Series Cylindrical Lock
Does the BEST 9K come with a core?
No. BEST ships the 9K less core as standard, and every keyed part on this page is sold less core. The 7-pin housing takes any BEST interchangeable core; BEST's standard is its small format interchangeable core (SFIC). Order the core separately, one per lock and two for the intruder, and we ship a keyed core only after its keyway and keying are confirmed in writing. Privacy and passage locks take no core.
What backset and door thickness does the BEST 9K fit?
Every part on this page has a 2-3/4 in backset; BEST makes 3-3/4 in and 5 in to order. The lock comes set for a 1-3/4 in door and adjusts on site up to 2-1/4 in, and a 1-3/8 in door takes BEST's thin-door spacers. The door needs a 2-1/8 in cross bore, a 1 in edge bore and two 5/16 in through-bolt holes.
Is the BEST 9K Grade 1?
Yes. BEST lists the 9K with BHMA for ANSI/BHMA A156.2, Series 4000, Grade 1. It is UL listed for 3-hour fire doors and carries a 10-year limited mechanical warranty.
Do I need to choose a door hand for the BEST 9K?
No. BEST's order code for the 9K has no handing position, so the part number is the same for either hand. At installation the latch goes in with its bevel toward the strike and each lever is pushed on pointing toward the hinges, as BEST's instructions show.
Can the BEST 9K go on a fire-rated door?
BEST lists the 9K with Underwriters Laboratories for 3-hour A label doors, single or in pairs: singles up to 4 x 10 ft and pairs up to 8 ft wide and 10 ft high, and its fact sheet adds cUL. Whether a lock may go on your door is decided by your local code official, the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
Which lever styles and roses does the BEST 9K come in?
Three levers: 14 curved return, 15 contour angle return and 16 curved without return, which is a special order. Four roses: C (3 in convex), D (3-1/2 in convex), and K and L, the same sizes with no ring. The stocked parts on this page use 14 and 15 levers on D roses, and two storeroom locks on C roses.
What is the difference between the BEST 9K entrance, storeroom, classroom and intruder functions?
In BEST's function chart, entrance (AB) locks the outside lever with an inside push button; storeroom (D) keeps the outside lever always locked, with the key retracting the latch; classroom (R) locks and unlocks the outside lever by key from outside; intruder (IN) locks and unlocks it by key from inside or outside. In all four the inside lever is always free. We do not advise which function a door needs; where codes apply, your AHJ makes the final call.
