How the part number is built

Every 1006 part number is built the same way: 1006, then a Complete Pac code if you want the faceplates included, then -F for fail safe, then the finish, then any monitor. 1006CLB-F-630 is the fail safe complete pac for latchbolt locks in satin stainless.

Will the HES 1006 fit my door?

The 1006 fits cylindrical and mortise locks that use an ANSI 4-7/8 in strike, with up to a 3/4 in latchbolt or a 1 in deadbolt, in a metal or wood frame cut to take the 1-11/16 in deep body.

Body or Complete Pac?

The body ships without a faceplate. Order the body only if you already have the right faceplate or know which one you need; otherwise a Complete Pac includes the faceplates for your lock type.

Latchbolt lock, no deadbolt

1006CLB: faceplates for cylindrical and mortise locks with up to a 3/4 in latchbolt.

Lock with a deadbolt

1006CDB for locks with up to a 1 in deadbolt, or 1006CAS where the strike must recapture the bolt when the door closes.

Not sure of the lock

1006CS, the Smart Strike, carries faceplates for every cylindrical and mortise lock with or without a 1 in deadbolt, plus SMART Pac III.

Frame

Metal or wood. The jamb is cut to take the 1-11/16 in deep body; horizontal adjustment comes from the keeper shims.

Power

A well-filtered 12 or 24 V DC supply: 480 mA at 12 V or 240 mA at 24 V per strike. Use the matching plug-in connector.

Monitoring

LBM or LBSM reports the latch state to an access control system. Not available on CS, CDB or CAS, and HES notes the monitor may not work with every faceplate option.

Fire-rated door

Only the fail secure 1006 carries the fire rating. The fail safe (F) version is not fire rated.

Replacing a failed 1006

Tell us first. HES SecuriCare covers the 1006 for five years from shipment for any reason, including installation error, and we open the claim with the invoice. Past five years, send a photo of the strike, its faceplate and the lock edge of the door.

Which faceplate fits your lock?

The faceplate matches the strike to your lock, and the wrong one is the usual 1006 ordering mistake. HES now offers LB, DB and CAS as its main options; the older letters are still sold.

From the HES 1006 catalog (AADSS1203080, faceplate pages) and installation instructions (AADSS1009170). HES gives these as recommendations and refers you to the lock maker's own documents, and it names further lock brands for KD, KM, HM, HTD, ND and NM than we list here. Tell us the make and series of your lock and we confirm the faceplate in writing before anything ships.

Code decisions belong to the AHJ

Electrified strikes on fire-rated doors and doors on a path of egress are covered by building and fire codes. Whether this strike, and which fail mode, may go on your door is decided by your Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). We supply listed hardware and confirm in writing the part number and options you have chosen; we do not decide code compliance.

How do I install and wire the HES 1006?

The HES 1006 goes into a frame cut for a 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 in faceplate with a 1-11/16 in deep pocket, and runs on 12 or 24 V DC chosen by the plug-in connector.

Voltage

Use the plug-in connector marked 12 VDC or 24 VDC; both come in the box. The black wire of the connector is negative.

Power quality

0.48 A at 12 V DC or 0.24 A at 24 V DC, continuous duty, from well-filtered DC with less than 1 V of ripple. HES warns that more than 10 percent over the rated voltage can damage the strike, so check the supply with a meter first.

Wire size

Minimum gauge for the round trip: 18 gauge up to 200 ft; 16 gauge at 12 V or 18 gauge at 24 V for 200 to 300 ft; 14 gauge at 12 V or 16 gauge at 24 V for 300 to 400 ft.

Frame cut-out

A metal frame is cut for a 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 in faceplate, with mounting holes 4-1/8 in apart and a pocket 3-3/8 in high and 1-11/16 in deep. Wood frames use the 9 in -2 faceplates. HES's HESCUT-MTK metal template kit marks the cut.

Monitor leads

LBM: white common, orange normally open, green normally closed. LBSM strikes add brown common, blue normally open and yellow normally closed. Contacts are rated 500 mA at 30 V DC.

Fail mode

Fail secure is standard and fail safe is a separate part number ending -F. HES documents give no way to change it in the field, so order the mode the door needs.

From HES's installation instructions (AADSS1009170) and catalog (AADSS1203080), both listed under Documents. Wire to the instructions in the box and to the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70).

What else does the HES 1006 need?

A Complete Pac needs nothing else to fit a standard ANSI frame prep; these parts cover an AC supply, cutting a new prep, a latch guard and replacement shims.

Questions about the HES 1006 Series Electric Strike

Is the HES 1006 fail safe or fail secure?

The HES 1006 is fail secure as standard: it stays locked when power is cut. The F version, for example 1006-F-630, is fail safe and unlocks when power is cut. Only the fail secure version carries the fire rating.

What is the difference between the 1006 body and the 1006CLB, CDB, CAS and CS?

The body ships without a faceplate. The Complete Pacs add the faceplates and brackets for a lock type: CLB for latchbolt locks, CDB for deadbolt locks, CAS for deadbolt recapture, and CS, the Smart Strike, covers all of them and adds SMART Pac III. Complete Pacs come only in 630 satin stainless.

Does the HES 1006 work with a deadbolt?

Yes, the HES 1006 works with a deadbolt up to 1 in, using a deadbolt faceplate. The CDB, CAS and CS complete pacs include one.

Does the HES 1006 run on 12 V or 24 V?

The HES 1006 runs on both 12 V and 24 V DC. It ships with 12 V and 24 V plug-in connectors and draws 480 mA at 12 V DC or 240 mA at 24 V DC. HES asks for well-filtered DC with ripple under 1 V.

Can the HES 1006 go on a fire-rated door?

HES lists the fail secure 1006 at 3 hours on a single door up to 48 x 96 in and 1-1/2 hours on a pair up to 96 x 96 in (UL 10C); the fail safe version is not fire rated. Whether it may go on your door is decided by your local code official, the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).

What warranty does the HES 1006 carry?

The HES 1006 carries HES SecuriCare: five years from shipment for any reason, including installation error. Installed with a SMART Pac III (2005M3), which the 1006CS includes, it is ten years. HES issues a Customer Care Form before anything is returned and may ask for the original invoice, so tell us and we open the claim.

Which HES 1006 faceplate do I need for my lock?

It depends on the lock's bolt. LB fits cylindrical and mortise locks with up to a 3/4 in latchbolt, DB fits locks with up to a 1 in deadbolt, and CAS recaptures a deadbolt; wood frames take the 9 in -2 versions. The faceplate table on this page gives the older letters and the locks HES names for each. Send us your lock's make and series and we confirm the faceplate in writing.

Can the HES 1006 run on AC?

HES's current catalog and installation instructions rate the 1006 for DC. On an AC supply, fit a SMART Pac III (2005M3), which takes 12 to 30 V AC and gives the strike DC.

How do I order the HES 1006?

  1. 1Choose the part number. From the table above, or send a photo of the lock, the door edge and the frame and we identify what fits.
  2. 2We confirm it in writing. Lock type, faceplate, fail mode, voltage and whether the door is fire rated, with the total including shipping, the same business day.
  3. 3You approve and pay. Prepaid. No account and no minimum order. Unused stock items can be returned within 30 days with a 25 percent restocking fee; installed or wired items and special orders cannot.
  4. 4It ships direct. From a US distributor warehouse, tracking on every box. Stocked items ship the same or next business day after payment.

Not sure which 1006 you need?

Send a photo of the door, the frame head and anything already fitted. We tell you which part number fits and what else the door needs, the same business day.
