Which HES 1500 part number do I need?
Order the 1500C Complete Pac in your finish: it includes HES's 1LB faceplate kit, which HES says fits every cylindrical and mortise lock with up to a 3/4 in latchbolt. Add LM or LMS if the access system needs monitoring. Order the body alone only if you already have the right 1500 faceplate.

How the part number is built
Every 1500 part number is built the same way: 1500, then C for the Complete Pac with its faceplate kit, then the finish, then any monitor. 1500C-630-LM is the Complete Pac in satin stainless steel with a lock monitor.

There is no separate fail safe part number: every 1500 ships fail secure and is switched to fail safe on site. Will the HES 1500 fit my door?
The 1500 fits cylindrical and mortise locks designed for a 4-7/8 in strike, with up to a 3/4 in latchbolt and no deadbolt, in a metal or wood frame cut to take the 1-3/8 in deep body.
Lock with no deadbolt
The 1500 takes cylindrical and mortise locks designed for a 4-7/8 in strike, with up to a 3/4 in latchbolt. HES's 1LB faceplate kit, included in every 1500C, covers them: 1J for cylindrical latchbolts, and 1K, 1KD or 1KM for mortise latchbolts by lock brand.
Lock with a deadbolt
Not the 1500: HES makes it for locks without a deadbolt. HES's 1600 and 1006 take a deadbolt up to 1 in, and our HES 1006 page covers the 1006.
Body or Complete Pac?
The body ships without a faceplate. Order it alone only if you already have the right 1500 faceplate; otherwise the 1500C Complete Pac includes the four 1LB faceplates.
Frame
Metal or wood. A metal frame is cut for the 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 in faceplate and the 1-3/8 in deep body; wood frames take the 9 in 1LB-2 faceplates. HES's comparison ticks the 1500, not the 1600 or 1006, for a fire-listed 2 in frame with 1/2 in drywall.
Fail secure or fail safe
One part number does both. The 1500 ships fail secure, locked when power is cut, and is changed to fail safe on site by shifting two screws on the back of the strike. Only the fail secure setting carries HES's fire rating.
Power
12 or 24 V DC for continuous duty: 240 mA at 12 V or 120 mA at 24 V per strike, set by the plug-in connector you use. On AC it is rated for intermittent duty only. Check the supply with a meter before connecting.
Monitoring
LM gives a contact that opens when the door opens; LMS adds a strike monitor with common, normally open and normally closed leads. LMS and DLMS are factory installed only; LM and DLM can be added in the field with OPT-1LM or OPT-1DLM.
Fire-rated door
HES lists the 1500 at 3 hours on a single door and 1-1/2 hours on a pair (UL 10C), in the fail secure setting only; set to fail safe it is not fire rated. HES's steps for converting to fail safe start by removing a fire screw, if one is fitted.
Replacing a failed 1500
Tell us first. HES SecuriCare covers the 1500 for five years from shipment for any reason, including installation error, and HES sells a replacement solenoid module (MOD-1SOL) and spring kit (OPT-1SRK). Past five years, send a photo of the strike, its faceplate and the lock edge of the door.
Which faceplate fits your lock?
The 1500C Complete Pac includes all four 1LB faceplates, so most orders need no choice. For a body-only order the faceplate matches the strike to your lock, and the wrong one is the usual ordering mistake.

HES names further lock brands for the 1KM and 1KD than we list here, and says compatibility is set when the strike is released, so ask when it is in doubt. The deadbolt faceplates (1N, 1ND, 1NM and 1NTD) are for the 1600 only. Tell us the make and series of your lock and we confirm the faceplate in writing before anything ships.
Electrified strikes on fire-rated doors and doors on a path of egress are covered by building and fire codes. Whether this strike, and which fail mode, may go on your door is decided by your Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ); HES's own instructions say the same of the fail secure setting and add that emergency exit hardware may be required. We supply listed hardware and confirm in writing the part number and options you have chosen; we do not decide code compliance.
How do I install and wire the HES 1500?
The HES 1500 goes into a frame cut for a 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 in faceplate, runs on 12 or 24 V DC chosen by the plug-in connector, and ships fail secure, with fail safe set on site.
Voltage
Use the plug-in connector marked 12 VDC for 12 V DC, 12 V AC or 16 V AC, and the one marked 24 VDC for 24 V DC or 24 V AC; both come in the box. The black wire is negative.
Power quality
0.24 A at 12 V DC or 0.12 A at 24 V DC, continuous duty; AC for intermittent duty only (10 percent duty cycle, 2 minutes on at most). HES warns that more than 10 percent over the rated voltage can badly damage the strike and void the warranty, so check the supply with a meter first. For inductive kickback protection HES suggests its 2005M3 SMART Pac III or 2001M plug-in bridge rectifier.
Wire size
Minimum gauge for the round trip: up to 200 ft, 18 gauge at 12 V or 20 gauge at 24 V; 200 to 300 ft, 16 or 18 gauge; 300 to 400 ft, 14 or 16 gauge.
Fail secure to fail safe
The 1500 ships fail secure. To change it, remove the #2-56 fire screw if one is fitted, loosen the two #2-56 screws on the back of the strike, shift them up and tighten them. HES says whether a fail secure strike suits the door is up to the AHJ, and that emergency exit hardware may be required.
Frame cut-out
A metal frame is cut for a 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 in faceplate with two #12-24 tapped holes 4-1/8 in apart and a pocket 3-3/8 in high (1/4 in more with a lip extension). Wood frames take the 9 in 1LB-2 faceplates. HES's HESCUT-MTK template kit marks the cut for 4-7/8 in ANSI preps.
Adjusting the keeper
The integrated shim adjusts horizontally: power the strike to open the keeper, loosen the locking screw with the 5/64 in hex wrench, turn the upper and lower set screws (clockwise raises, counterclockwise lowers) and tighten the locking screw.
Monitor leads
LM: white and tan, open when the door is open. LMS strike monitor: brown common, yellow normally open, blue normally closed, given with the strike unpowered. Contacts rated 500 mA at 30 V.

What else does the HES 1500 need?
A Complete Pac needs nothing else to fit a standard 4-7/8 in frame prep. These parts add faceplates to a body-only order, cut a new prep, add monitoring, protect the solenoid and repair a strike in the field. No power supply comes in the box.

Is the HES 1500 fail safe or fail secure?
Both. The HES 1500 ships fail secure, staying locked when power is cut, and is changed to fail safe on site by shifting two screws on the back of the strike, so one part number covers both modes. Only the fail secure setting carries HES's fire rating.
Does the HES 1500 work with a deadbolt?
No. HES makes the 1500 for cylindrical and mortise locks without a deadbolt, with up to a 3/4 in latchbolt. For a lock with a deadbolt up to 1 in, HES makes the 1600 and the 1006; our HES 1006 page covers the 1006.
What is the difference between the HES 1500 and 1500C?

What is the difference between the HES 1500 and 1006?
The 1500 is for latchbolt locks with no deadbolt; the 1006 also takes a deadbolt up to 1 in. The 1500's body is 1-3/8 in deep against the 1006's 1-11/16 in, and it switches between fail secure and fail safe on site, where the 1006 is ordered one way or the other. HES rates the 1006 at 350 ft-lb dynamic strength and the 1500 at 70 ft-lb.
What warranty does the HES 1500 carry?
HES SecuriCare: five years from shipment for any reason, including installation error. Installed with a SMART Pac III (2005M3), it is ten years. HES issues a Customer Care Form before anything is returned and may ask for the original invoice, so tell us and we open the claim.
