HES 1600 faceplate and strike body, main dimensions (from the HES catalog; the depth is measured from the face of the faceplate). Cut the frame from HES's instructions and template, not from this drawing.

Will the HES 1600 fit my door?

The 1600 fits cylindrical and mortise locks that use a 4-7/8 in strike, with up to a 3/4 in latchbolt or a 1 in deadbolt, in a metal or wood frame cut to take its 1-5/8 in deep body.

Body or Complete Pac?

The body ships without faceplates. A Complete Pac adds them: the CS has both the latchbolt kit (1LB) and the deadbolt kit (1DB), the CLB the latchbolt kit and the CDB the deadbolt kit. The kits hold 4-7/8 in faceplates for metal frames.

Latchbolt lock, no deadbolt

1600-CLB, or the CS: the 1LB kit covers cylindrical and mortise locks with up to a 3/4 in latchbolt.

Mortise lock with a deadbolt

1600-CDB, or the CS: the 1DB kit covers mortise locks whose 1 in deadbolt is used for night latch function only, or a normally extended 1 in deadbolt with a center-lined deadlatch. HES says the 1600 is not intended for continuous recapture of a 1 in deadbolt and points to the 1006CAS for that.

Frame

Metal or wood, cut to take the strike; HES gives the body depth as 1-5/8 in. For a wood frame HES's instructions use the 9 in 1LB-2 or 1DB-2 faceplates, ordered separately. HES's comparison chart claims a fire-listed 2 in frame with 1/2 in drywall for the shallower 1500, not the 1600.

Power

240 mA at 12 V DC or 120 mA at 24 V DC per strike. HES rates the 1600 for continuous duty on DC only; on AC it is intermittent duty, a 10 percent duty cycle with 2 minutes on at most. A fail safe strike is powered all the time the door is locked, so it needs DC.

Fail safe or fail secure

Either, set in the field; every 1600 ships fail secure. HES's fire rating applies in fail secure only.

Monitoring

LM is a lock monitor whose contact opens when the door opens; DLM has dual lock monitors. LMS and DLMS add a strike monitor and are factory installed only. LM and DLM can be added later with HES's OPT-1LM and OPT-1DLM kits. HES notes the monitor options were not evaluated under UL 294 or UL 1034.

Fire-rated door

HES lists the 1600 under UL 10C at 3 hours on a single door and 1-1/2 hours on a pair, in fail secure only. Your AHJ decides whether it may go on your door.

Replacing a failed 1600

Tell us first. HES SecuriCare covers the 1600 for five years from shipment for any reason, including installation error, and we open the claim with the invoice. Replacing another strike? Send a photo of the strike, its faceplate and the lock edge of the door.

Which faceplate fits your lock?

The faceplate matches the strike to your lock. Every 1600 faceplate is 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 in except the 9 in wood-frame kits; the CS carries both metal-frame kits, the CLB the latchbolt kit and the CDB the deadbolt kit.

From HES's 1500 and 1600 installation instructions (AADSS1053602) and its 1600 product page. The instructions show two metal-frame cut-outs: one for 1J, 1KM and 1NM, which HES says cannot be used with the Accentra 8700 or one other mortise series it names, and one for 1KD, 1ND and 1NTD, which can. HES names further lock brands than we list here and says compatibility is set when a strike is released, so tell us the make and series of your lock and we confirm the faceplate in writing before anything ships.

Code decisions belong to the AHJ

Electrified strikes on fire-rated doors and doors on a path of egress are covered by building and fire codes. Whether this strike, and which fail mode, may go on your door is decided by your Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ); HES's own instructions leave fail secure use to the AHJ and note that emergency exit hardware may be required. We supply listed hardware and confirm in writing the part number and options you have chosen; we do not decide code compliance.

How do I install and wire the HES 1600?

The HES 1600 goes into a frame cut for a 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 in faceplate with a pocket 3-3/8 in high, runs on 12 or 24 V chosen by the plug-in connector, and ships fail secure, with fail safe set in the field.

Voltage

Use the plug-in connector marked 12 VDC for 12 V DC, 12 V AC or 16 V AC, and the one marked 24 VDC for 24 V DC or 24 V AC; both come in the box. The black wire of the connector is negative.

Power quality

240 mA at 12 V DC or 120 mA at 24 V DC, continuous duty on DC; AC is intermittent duty only, a 10 percent duty cycle with 2 minutes on at most. HES warns that an input more than 10 percent over the rating can severely damage the strike, so check the supply with a meter first. For inductive kickback protection HES suggests its 2005M3 SMART Pac III or 2001M bridge rectifier.

Fail secure to fail safe

The 1600 ships fail secure. To make it fail safe, remove the #2-56 fire screw if one is fitted, loosen the two #2-56 screws on the back of the strike without removing them, shift them up and tighten them.

Wire size

Minimum gauge for the round trip: 18 gauge at 12 V or 20 gauge at 24 V up to 200 ft; 16 or 18 gauge for 200 to 300 ft; 14 or 16 gauge for 300 to 400 ft.

Frame cut-out

A 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 in faceplate cut with two 12-24 threaded holes 4-1/8 in apart and a pocket 3-3/8 in high, 1/4 in higher with a lip extension. For a cylindrical lock the strike's centerline lines up with the lock's; for a mortise lock it sits 3/8 in above. HES's HESCUT-MTK template kit marks the cut.

Horizontal adjustment

The shim is built in and adjusts out 1/8 in. Power the strike to open the keeper, loosen the locking screw with the 5/64 in hex wrench, turn the upper and lower set screws (clockwise raises, counterclockwise lowers) and tighten the locking screw.

Monitor leads

Lock monitor (LM): white and tan, open when the door is open. Strike monitor (LMS, DLMS): brown common, yellow normally open, blue normally closed, with the strike unpowered. Contacts are rated 500 mA at 30 V.

From HES's installation instructions for the 1500 and 1600 (AADSS1053602), its 1600 catalog (AADSS1203082) and lock cross reference (AADSS1052973), all listed under Documents. Wire to the instructions in the box and to the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70), as HES's instructions require.

What else does the HES 1600 need?

A Complete Pac needs nothing else to fit a metal frame cut to the standard 4-7/8 in ANSI strike prep; these parts add faceplates to a body or a wood frame, condition the power, add monitoring, or service the strike.

Questions about the HES 1600 Series Electric Strike

Is the HES 1600 fail safe or fail secure?

Either. The HES 1600 ships fail secure, so it stays locked when power is cut, and is changed to fail safe in the field: remove the #2-56 fire screw if one is fitted, then loosen, shift up and retighten the two #2-56 screws on the back of the strike. There is no separate fail safe part number. HES rates it for fire doors in fail secure only.

Does the HES 1600 run on 12 V or 24 V?

Both. The HES 1600 ships with 12 V and 24 V plug-in connectors and draws 240 mA at 12 V DC or 120 mA at 24 V DC, low enough that HES calls it PoE friendly. DC runs it continuously; on AC HES rates it for intermittent duty only, at most a 10 percent duty cycle with 2 minutes on at a time.

Which locks and frames does the HES 1600 fit?

HES says the 1600 fits every brand of cylindrical or mortise lock designed for a 4-7/8 in strike, with up to a 3/4 in latchbolt or a 1 in deadbolt, in a metal or wood frame cut to take its 1-5/8 in deep body. The faceplate does the matching: the CLB includes the 1LB latchbolt kit, the CDB the 1DB deadbolt kit and the CS both. Send us your lock's make and series and we confirm the faceplate in writing.

Can the HES 1600 go on a fire-rated door?

HES lists the 1600 under UL 10C at 3 hours on a single door and 1-1/2 hours on a pair, in fail secure only; HES gives no fire rating in fail safe. Whether it may go on your door is decided by your local code official, the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).

What do the LM, DLM, LMS and DLMS options on the HES 1600 do?

They report to an access control or alarm system. LM is a lock monitor whose contact opens when the door opens, and DLM has dual lock monitors. LMS and DLMS add a strike monitor that reports whether the strike is locked, and are factory installed only; LM and DLM can be added later with HES's OPT-1LM and OPT-1DLM kits. Contacts are rated 500 mA at 30 V.

Should I choose the HES 1600 or the HES 1006?

Both are Grade 1 strikes for cylindrical and mortise locks with up to a 1 in deadbolt. The 1600 sets fail safe or fail secure in the field, runs on AC or DC at about half the 1006's current, and has an integrated shim and a fully finished keeper and case. The 1006 is the heavier strike, 350 ft-lb dynamic strength against 70, and where a 1 in deadbolt must be released and recaptured HES points to the 1006CAS, not the 1600. For a lock with no deadbolt, HES also makes the shallower 1500, with a 1-3/8 in body.

What warranty does the HES 1600 carry?

HES SecuriCare: five years from shipment for any reason, including installation error, and ten years when installed with a SMART Pac III (2005M3). HES's installation instructions add that an input more than 10 percent over the rated voltage voids the warranty, so check the supply first. HES issues a Customer Care Form before anything is returned and may ask for the original invoice, so tell us and we open the claim.

How do I order the HES 1600?

  1. 1Choose the part number. From the table above, or send a photo of the lock, the door edge and the frame and we identify what fits.
  2. 2We confirm it in writing. Lock type, faceplate, fail mode, voltage and whether the door is fire rated, with the total including shipping, the same business day.
  3. 3You approve and pay. Prepaid. No account and no minimum order. Unused stock items can be returned within 30 days with a 25 percent restocking fee; installed or wired items and special orders cannot.
  4. 4It ships direct. From a US distributor warehouse, tracking on every box. Stocked items ship the same or next business day after payment; special-order parts are quoted with their lead time.
