Every row is a real HES part number. Prices in US dollars; stocked means a US distributor holds it and it ships the same or next business day after payment.

How the part number is built

Every 9600 part number is built the same way: 9600, then the finish, then any monitor. 9600-630-LBM is the satin stainless steel strike with a latchbolt monitor. Voltage and fail mode are not in the part number, because both are set on site.

Finish

  • 605Bright brass
  • 606Satin brass
  • 612Satin bronze
  • 613Bronze toned
  • 613EDark oxidized satin bronze powder
  • 629Bright stainless steel
  • 630Satin stainless steel

Monitor

  • (none)No monitor
  • -LBMLatchbolt monitor: detects when the latchbolt is in a locked state
  • -LBSMLatchbolt strike monitor: detects when the latchbolt and strike are in a locked state

HES fits the monitors at the factory, so a monitor is chosen when you order. Some distributors write the same part without hyphens, as 9600630LBM. Need a configuration that is not in the table, such as a monitored 606 or 629? Send us the part number and we quote it the same business day.

HES 9600 strike 9 inches long and 1-3/4 inches wide, with its mounting holes 4-1/8 inches above and below the latchbolt centerline, and 3/4 inch deep in side view
HES 9600 main dimensions (from HES's 9600 catalog page and installation instructions; the keeper opening is drawn from HES's drawing and not dimensioned). Mark the frame from HES's 9000-MTK template or its instructions, not from this drawing.

Will the HES 9600 fit my door?

The 9600 fits a rim exit device with a Pullman latchbolt up to 3/4 in throw. It fixes to the face of a metal or wood frame without cutting it, and an aluminum frame with a blade stop needs HES's 9000-ASB spacer bracket.

Exit device latch

The 9600 takes a Pullman latchbolt up to 3/4 in throw on a rim exit device, and HES's brochure calls it compatible with most manufacturers. Send us the make and model of the exit device and we confirm the fit in writing before anything ships.

A different latch

HES makes the 9400 for Pullman latches up to 1/2 in throw, the 9700 for SquareBolt-style devices (Corbin Russwin SecureBolt, Accentra SquareBolt) and the 9800 for Adams Rite Starwheel and interlocking devices; it lists the 9600 for Pullman latches only. Ask us for any of them.

Offset deadlatch

On a Corbin Russwin 5000 Series or Accentra 7000 Series (formerly Yale Commercial) device with an offset deadlatch, HES's frame drawing adds a separate alignment line for the deadlatch. Tell us the device and we confirm the fit in writing.

Replacing another strike

HES's compatibility chart names the 9600 as its replacement for the Adams Rite 74R1, RCI 0162 and Trine 4800 strikes, offered as a convenience only: HES refers you to each maker's catalog. Send a photo of the old strike and the exit device.

Frame

Metal or wood. The strike fixes to the face of the frame with no cutting; holes for its screws and wires are drilled, and tapped where needed. Wood screws are not included, and an aluminum frame with a blade stop needs HES's 9000-ASB spacer bracket.

Door gap

HES's 9000-108 and 9000-116 spacer plates, 1/8 in and 1/16 in thick, offset the strike from the frame to suit the gap.

Pair of doors

HES's SMB surface mounting box installs on the inactive door of a pair to take the 9600 for a rim exit device. HES makes it in black only.

Power

A 12 or 24 V DC supply sized for 500 mA at 12 V or 250 mA at 24 V per strike. On an AC supply, HES's 2005M3 SMART Pac III takes AC or DC and converts AC to DC.

Fire-rated door

HES lists the 9600 as not fire rated. Its 9500 takes the same 3/4 in Pullman latch and is listed as 3-hour fire rated in fail secure only. Whether a strike may go on your door is for your AHJ.

Windstorm opening

HES rates the 9600 for windstorm openings only with its lockdown screw fitted, and says fail safe should not be used there. What the opening needs is for your AHJ.

Replacing a failed 9600

Tell us first. HES SecuriCare covers the 9600 for five years from shipment for any reason, including installation error, and we open the claim with the invoice. Past five years, send a photo of the strike and the exit device.

Code decisions belong to the AHJ

Electrified strikes on doors people exit through, on fire-rated doors and on windstorm-rated openings are covered by building and fire codes. Whether this strike, and which fail mode, may go on your door is decided by your Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). We supply listed hardware and confirm in writing the part number and options you have chosen; we do not decide code compliance.

How do I install and wire the HES 9600?

The HES 9600 fixes to the face of the frame with two 1/4-20 screws 4-1/8 in above and below the latchbolt centerline, runs on 12 or 24 V DC chosen by its plug-in connector, and ships fail secure.

Voltage

Plug in the connector marked 12 VDC or 24 VDC; both come in the box. Without a connector, HES's diagram joins red and violet for positive and black and red/green for negative at 12 V; at 24 V, red is positive, red/green is negative, and violet and black are joined to each other.

Power quality

500 mA at 12 V DC or 250 mA at 24 V DC, continuous duty. HES warns that many supplies run above their rating and that input more than 10 percent over the solenoid rating may cause severe damage, so check the voltage with a multimeter first.

Wire size

Minimum gauge for the round trip: at 12 V, 18 gauge up to 200 ft and 16 gauge from 200 to 400 ft; at 24 V, 22 gauge up to 300 ft and 20 gauge from 300 to 400 ft.

Marking the frame

Mark the latchbolt centerline on the frame. HES's drawing puts the two 1/4-20 mounting holes 4-1/8 in above and below it, 7/8 in from the edge toward the door, with a 3/4 in hole for the power wires and a 1/2 in hole for monitor wires 1-5/16 in either side of it. HES marks the drawing not to scale and recommends its 9000-MTK template kit.

Fail mode

The strike ships fail secure. For fail safe, take out the selector stop pin on each side of the strike body with the 5/64 in hex key, refit both toward the center of the strike and tighten them; on an LBSM strike, move the monitoring switch too. HES says fail safe should not be used in fire rated or windstorm resistant applications.

Adjusting and locking

Fix the strike with the two 1/4-20 x 1 in screws, check the latchbolt against both keepers, and lock any horizontal adjustment with the 10-32 set screws. The optional #10-24 or 10-32 lockdown screw adds security; remove the strike before drilling for it. Without it, HES says the 9600 is not windstorm rated and its windstorm label should come off.

Monitor leads

LBM: white common, orange normally open, green normally closed. LBSM: brown common, blue normally open, yellow normally closed. HES gives these switch states for an unpowered strike with the door open.

Aluminum frame with a blade stop

HES says a 9000-ASB spacer bracket is needed for a secure installation. On a retrofit the exit device may have to move toward the hinge side of the door to suit it, and the lockdown hole then has to be drilled and tapped.

From HES's installation instructions for the 9400 to 9800 strikes (AADSS1053638) and its 9600 catalog page (AADSS1203093), both listed under Documents. Wire to the instructions in the box and to the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70), as HES requires.

What else does the HES 9600 need?

The 9600 needs no faceplate and no frame cutting. These HES parts cover an AC supply, the door gap, an aluminum frame with a blade stop, a pair of doors and marking the frame.

Questions about the HES 9600 Series Electric Strike

Which exit devices does the HES 9600 work with?

The HES 9600 works with rim exit devices that have a Pullman latchbolt up to 3/4 in throw, which HES says covers most manufacturers. For a Pullman latch up to 1/2 in throw HES makes the 9400, for SquareBolt-style devices the 9700, and for Adams Rite Starwheel or interlocking devices the 9800. Send us the make and model of your exit device and we confirm the fit in writing.

Is the HES 9600 fail safe or fail secure?

The HES 9600 is both: it is field selectable and ships fail secure, locked when the power is off. Moving its two selector stop pins with the hex key supplied makes it fail safe, unlocked when the power is off. HES says fail safe should not be used in fire rated or windstorm resistant applications. Which mode your door needs is for your Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).

Does the HES 9600 run on 12 V or 24 V?

The HES 9600 runs on both 12 V and 24 V DC: fit the plug-in connector marked 12 VDC or 24 VDC, both in the box. It draws 500 mA at 12 V DC or 250 mA at 24 V DC, continuous duty. HES warns that input more than 10 percent over the rating may cause severe damage, so check the supply with a multimeter first.

Can the HES 9600 go on a fire-rated door?

The HES 9600 carries no fire rating: HES's catalog lists it as non-fire rated. For a fire-rated opening with a Pullman latch rim device, HES makes the 9500, which takes the same 3/4 in latch and is listed as 3-hour fire rated in fail secure only; we can quote it. Whether any strike may go on your door is decided by your local code official, the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).

What is the difference between the HES 9600, 9600-LBM and 9600-LBSM?

The monitor. The plain 9600 has none. LBM adds a latchbolt monitor, which HES says detects when the latchbolt is in a locked state; LBSM adds a latchbolt strike monitor, which detects when the latchbolt and the strike are both locked. HES fits the monitor at the factory, so choose it when you order.

What is the difference between the HES 9600 and the 9400?

The latch throw. HES makes the 9600 for rim exit devices with a Pullman latchbolt up to 3/4 in throw and the 9400 for those up to 1/2 in. HES also lists the 9600 as windstorm rated, which its selector guide does not show for the 9400. Check the throw in the exit device maker's documents, or send us the make and model and we confirm it.

What warranty does the HES 9600 carry?

The HES 9600 carries HES SecuriCare: five years from shipment for any reason, including installation error, vandalism or force majeure. Installed with a SMART Pac III (2005M3) it is ten years. HES issues a Customer Care Form before anything is returned and may ask for the original invoice, so tell us first and we open the claim.

How do I order the HES 9600?

  1. 1Choose the part number. From the table above, or send a photo of the exit device, its latch and the frame and we identify what fits.
  2. 2We confirm it in writing. Exit device and latch, frame, finish, monitor, voltage, fail mode and whether the opening is fire rated or windstorm rated, with the price and the total including shipping, the same business day.
