How the part number is built
Every CloserPlus 8501 part number is built the same way: the arm prefix CLP, the closer 8501, any suffix, then the finish. CLP8501T-689 is the 8501 with the CloserPlus thumbturn hold open arm, in aluminum painted. Norton writes the finish after an x (CLP8501T x 689); distributors write CLP8501T-689 or CLP8501T689.

The closer and arm are non-handed, and the CloserPlus arm mounts on the push side only. The thumbturn hold open (T) is not permitted on a fire-door assembly. Plated finishes, the ramp hold open, delayed action and other covers are quoted on request. Need a configuration that is not in the table, such as CLP8501DA-689 or a tri-packed 8501? Send us the part number and we quote it the same business day.

Will the Norton 8501 fit my door?
The CLP8501 fits the push side of a door 28 to 48 in wide, with a top rail at least 4-5/8 in high (or a drop plate) and a frame stop or rabbet that takes the arm's soffit plate, on metal or wood doors and frames.
Push side, parallel arm only
The CloserPlus is a parallel arm: the closer body mounts on the push side of the door, below the frame, and the arm runs almost parallel to the door with its soffit plate on the frame stop or rabbet. For a pull side or top jamb mounting the door needs a different 8501 arm.
Door width and size
Standard door widths are 28 to 48 in, and the spring is set on site through sizes 1 to 6 by door width. Norton's sizing assumes 1-3/4 in by 7 ft standard weight doors swinging to 110 degrees; a taller or heavier door, wind or stack pressure may need more power or a larger closer.
Stop angle
The built-in stop is set when the arm is installed, anywhere from 85 to 110 degrees in 5 degree steps, and the closer's backcheck slows the door before it reaches the stop. Norton notes the door may overtravel up to 5 degrees past the set position.
Auxiliary door stop
Norton advises a wall, floor or overhead stop wherever one can be fitted, and requires one where the door is abused. It intends the CloserPlus arm for doors where an auxiliary stop cannot be used and no more than moderate abuse is expected, and recommends its Unitrol arm for harder conditions.
Top rail and frame
Without a drop plate the door needs a top rail at least 4-5/8 in high; the 8148 drop plate takes the closer on a top rail as narrow as 2-9/16 in. The 2019S spacer block, which comes with the closer, supports the soffit plate on a narrow frame soffit; a frame too narrow for the soffit plate takes the 6890 bracket, a blade stop the 6891 spacer block and a flush transom the 2019L bracket.
Door material and fasteners
The closer comes with self-drilling screws, machine screws and sleeve nuts. Self-drilling screws need a 3/16 in pilot hole in wood. Norton's template calls for sex bolts on a wood or plastic-faced fire door, and channel or box reinforcement in a hollow metal door when the closer is through-bolted. Tell us the door material and thickness: sleeve nuts are sized for 1-3/4 in doors unless 2-1/4 in is ordered.
Fire-rated door
Norton lists the 8000 Series closer under UL 10C positive pressure up to 3 hours. The CLP8501T is not permitted on a fire-door assembly because of its hold open, so a fire door takes the CLP8501. Norton also refers you to NFPA 80 for the hinges on a fire door.
Low opening force doors
Norton states the 8000 Series meets the opening force requirements of the ADA and ANSI/BHMA A117.1 for interior doors, and warns that a closer turned down to a low opening force may not close and latch the door dependably against wind or building stack pressure.
Handing
The closer and arm are non-handed. At installation the arm is lined up with the pinion's L mark on a left hand door or its R mark on a right hand door, so the same part fits either hand.
Replacing an old closer
The 8501 body fixes with four holes 3/4 in apart vertically and 12 in apart horizontally. Send a photo of the old closer, its arm and the frame head, and we confirm the part number and options in writing before anything ships.
Door closers on fire-rated doors and on doors that must meet accessibility requirements are covered by building, fire and accessibility codes. Whether this closer, and a hold open, may go on your door is decided by your Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). We supply listed hardware and confirm in writing the part number and options you have chosen; we do not decide code compliance.
How do I install the Norton CLP8501?
The CLP8501 fixes to the push side of the door with four screws through the closer body and five into the frame stop or rabbet for the arm's soffit plate, all marked from Norton's template 7380-1301 for the stop angle you choose.
Mark the door and frame
Choose the opening angle, 85 to 110 degrees, and mark the four closer holes on the door and the five soffit plate holes on the stop or rabbet from Norton's template or the dimension chart in its instructions. The template is drawn for hinges up to 5 in wide.
Set the spring power
Turn the power adjustment shaft clockwise to raise the power. Norton's chart for the CLP8501 gives 9 full turns for an interior door 28 to 32 in wide (10 exterior), 11 (12) for 33 to 36 in, 13 (14) for 37 to 42 in and 15 (16) for 43 to 48 in. Twenty turns is the maximum; the closer ships at mid power.
Mount the closer and arm
Fit the closer with its power adjustment shaft toward the hinge edge of the door. With the door closed, close valves S and L, turn the pinion 50 degrees or more to line the arm mark up with the pinion flat (L for a left hand door, R for a right hand door), fit the arm, then reopen the valves.
Fix the soffit plate
With the door closed, line the soffit plate up with its holes and fix it to the frame with the flat head screws supplied, adding the 2019S or 6891 spacer block if the frame needs one. The arm is under spring tension.
Adjust the closing speed and backcheck
Valve S sets the sweep speed and valve L the latch speed. Norton's instructions call for 4 to 7 seconds from 90 degrees (its newer Tri-Style sheet says 3 to 7), and longer where elderly or disabled people or small children use the door. The 2010 ADA Standards require at least 5 seconds from 90 degrees open to 12 degrees from the latch (section 404.2.8.1). The backcheck valve sets the cushion on opening and must never be closed completely, and backing any valve out of the closer makes it leak.
Set the thumbturn hold open (CLP8501T)
Turning the knob on the arm clockwise engages the hold open and increases its holding force; turning it counterclockwise reduces the force and releases the hold open.
Fit the cover
Make every adjustment before the cover goes on, then slide the cover insert into the unused cutout and fix the full cover with the screws supplied.
From Norton's installation instructions for 8000 Series parallel rigid and CloserPlus arms (80-9380-2209-020), template 7380-1301 and the Surface Closers catalog (43506), all listed under Documents. Prepare the door and frame from Norton's template, not from this page.
What else does the Norton 8501 need?
A CLP8501 needs nothing else on a standard push side opening: the arm, the 2019S spacer block, the screws and the sleeve nuts come with it. These parts cover a narrow top rail, a door with glass, narrow, blade stop or flush transom frames, security screws, and replacement arms and covers.

Questions about the Norton 8501 Door Closer with CloserPlus Arm
Which side of the door does the Norton CLP8501 go on?
The push side. The CloserPlus is a parallel arm: the closer body mounts on the door face you push from, below the frame, and the arm's soffit plate fixes to the frame stop or rabbet. For a pull side or top jamb mounting the door needs a different 8501 arm, which we quote.
What is the difference between the Norton CLP8501 and CLP8501T?
Both are the 8501 closer with the CloserPlus arm, whose built-in stop halts the door at an angle set between 85 and 110 degrees. The CLP8501T adds a thumbturn hold open: turning the knob on the arm clockwise engages the hold open at the stop point and turning it back releases it, and the holding force is adjustable. The hold open version is not permitted on a fire-door assembly.
What size Norton 8501 do I need?
One part covers sizes 1 to 6. The spring is adjusted on site by door width and by whether the door is interior or exterior, following the turns in Norton's chart, and the CloserPlus arm fits doors 28 to 48 in wide. Norton's sizing assumes 1-3/4 in by 7 ft standard weight doors swinging to 110 degrees, so a taller or heavier door, wind or stack pressure may need more power.
Can the Norton CLP8501 go on a fire-rated door?
Norton lists the 8000 Series closer under UL 10C positive pressure up to 3 hours, and its template calls for sex bolts on a wood or plastic-faced fire door. The CLP8501T is not permitted on a fire-door assembly because of its hold open, so a fire door takes the CLP8501. Whether a closer may go on your door is decided by your local code official, the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).
What finishes does the Norton CLP8501 come in?
689 aluminum painted is the stocked finish. 690 dark bronze, 691 light bronze, 693 black and 696 gold painted, 613E dark oxidized satin bronze-equivalent and BSP black suede powder coat are special order, and Norton also makes 694, WSP and plated finishes to order. The finish follows the part number, as in CLP8501-690.
What comes in the box with the Norton CLP8501?
The 8501 closer with its full cover, the CloserPlus arm with its soffit plate and removable stop, the 2019S spacer block, and Norton's standard fasteners: self-drilling screws, machine screws and sleeve nuts. Drop plates and the 6890, 6891 and 2019L brackets are separate. Norton gives the closer a 30-year limited warranty.
Is the Norton CLP8501 the same as the Norton 8501?
It is the same 8501 closer body and full cover with a different arm. The plain 8501 is Tri-Style packed, with arms for regular, top jamb or parallel mounting, and Norton says those arms need an auxiliary door stop; the CLP8501's CloserPlus arm has the stop built in. To replace an existing 8501, send us a photo of the closer and its arm and we confirm the part in writing.
